9XR Master to 9XR Slave for Training

Was very excited to finally receive my two Turnigy 9XR radios (one for myself, and a second for my two sons to get into the RC hobby). We have been trying for the last three days to set the radios up as a Master and a Slave for training purposes, but have pretty much failed on every account. I am using the FrSky DJT Telemetry Module with the Master radio (and no module with the intended Slave radio). We have actually been attempting to set the two radios up for the last three evenings. We have watched the several online videos on how to do this (now out of date and confusing as we have the latest "factory" firmware, so the old menus in the videos are mostly irrelevant). And I actually think I may have ruined a Turnigy AE-30A Brushless ESC in the process, if that is possible (it now only runs the motor at a very, very slow speed with the radio throttle on full, and no exponential values added etc). Apparently there is a throttle issue when setting up a Master-Slave for training. Here are the instructions we have now been following:

1. Turn master/instructor radio on.
2. Press right direction pad to get to primary menus (11 in total), and select the model you wish to fly (Menu 1/11).
3. Go to Menu 2/11, and about three-quarters of the way down the menu options, turn the “Trainer” option to “On”.
4. Press the “Exit” button twice to return back to initial start-up window.
5. Press left direction pad to get to secondary menus (5 in total), and go to Menu 2/5 (the “TRAINER” menu).
6. Under the “Mode” heading, change RUD, THR, ELE, and AIL to the := symbol.
7. Under the “SRC” heading, change the channels to match your radio (for Mode 2 radios, usually CH1-THR; CH2-AIL; CH3-ELE; and CH4-RUD).
8. Under the “SW” heading, change all four to “TRN” for the trainer switch.
9. Now plug in the trainer/buddy cord into the master/instructor radio; and plug the other end of the trainer/buddy cord into the slave/student radio without turning the power switch on for the slave/student radio. The slave/student radio should power up on its own.
10. Center the sticks on the slave/student radio for the three RUD, AIL, and ELE channels; and for the THR channel, place the stick at the very bottom of its range (i.e. zero throttle).
11. On the master/instructor radio, which should still be on Menu 2/5, scroll down to the “Cal” tab and press the “Menu” button. The four sets of numbers at the bottom should zero out. You should be able to move the sticks on the slave and see those four numbers change on the bottom of the master/slave radio menu.

Note: If the throttle will not work at this point, go back to Step 10 and center the sticks for all four channels, including the throttle; and then carry on the remainder of the process.

Not sure why there is a throttle issue... Shouldn't the throttle be set to the very bottom rather than centred position? Anyway, we can get the radios to recognize each other without difficulty as per the instructions (i.e. I can calibrate from the Master so that it recognizes control movement from the slave); but we cannot get the Master Trainer Switch to work and interrupt controls from the slave radio. When we hook everything up with the actual airplane, the Master trainer switch doesn't work at all, and no control movement from the Slave Radio is recognised (or impeded) on the airplane at all. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it seems like I'm missing several more steps to the process (i.e. how to make the Master Trainer switch work, and the airplane recognize the Slave radio). I know on the older firmware you had to set the Trainer Switch up as a custom switch (which seems kind of silly, as there should be a basic firmware option that allows this to be undertaken more intuitively--lots of people will no doubt use this Trainer function). Do I still need to set up the Trainer switch as a custom switch? And if so, how do I do this with the new menus found in the new firmware (seems like there are two options--"Custom Switch" and "Safety Switch"--which one?). Again, how does one do this step by step?

In general, while I love the look and feel of these radios (and the price is absolutely amazing), I'm really struggling and dissatisfied with the firmware/software that they run on. I feel like the radios were released to the public before there was significant and clear documentation supporting even the basic use/functions of the radio. The current manual is a start, but not really helpful (it really serves as a basic "description" of some of the more obvious menus). Setting the radio up is not an easy nor intuitive task--even with the manual. In fact, it is downright daunting! It took me almost four hours to simply figure out how to program the basic Throttle, Rudder, Elevator, and Aileron functions (figuring out how to input exponential took several more hours on top of this). You really do need to be a "rocket scientist" to figure even the more basic setup functions for this radio. I expect this will improve as more users share their knowledge, but at the moment I must admit that I'm pretty frustrated with the 9XR, and I haven't had a single second of actual flight time on it. Any help setting up the Trainer Switch/Buddy Box function of the 9XR, and resetting (can this even be done) my Turnigy AE-30A Brushless ESC would be most gratefully and sincerely received.

I suspect that the videos you refer to as outdated are describing how to set up the master trainer function using OpenTX. The original firmware in the radio is a variant of Er9x. Neither firmware have changed the master /slave functionality lately, but they are not the same.

I agree that it is complicated to successfully set up master / slave using these radios.

You have probably not ruined your speed controller. What you might have done is recalibrated it by mistake. This has nothing to do with the radio.
To calibrate the speed controller correctly , do as follows :
1) Disconnect the plane battery power.
2) Turn on the radio
3) Set the throttle to full on.
4) Connect the plane battery.
The plane will beep. Wait a few seconds for the beeps to stop.
5) Set the throttle to off.
The plane beeps again and is now properly calibrated and ready to fly.

All speed controllers I have ever tested are calibrated like this. It is very easy to make an erroneous calibration by connecting the battery in the plane with the throttle slightly engaged. Everyone has done that.

Tried to recalibrate the ESC tonight, but without luck. Tried both your instructions DVOGONEN, as well as the almost incoherent instructions that came with the Turnigy ESC. Also tried to get the trainer switch to work properly as well, but no luck there either. I'll probably end up ordering a USB connector and switching to the OpenTX firmware. It looks like the documentation for that system is much clearer. Would still be extremely grateful for further advice/assistance. Is there any way to contact Turnigy directly, rather than through the forum?

Sorry to hear that you had no luck recalibrating the speed controller. It is very uncommon that you harm these by just fiddling around with the radio. The usual road to destruction is to overheat them running full throttle to long. But who knows, you might have lucked out and gotten a faulty one.

I am afraid that the OpenTX software is similar to er9x as far as the usability goes. But the documentation is better.

Turnigy is not a company, it is a brand name HobbyKing uses. The 9xr was designed inhouse by HobbyKing. It is a very close copy of the FlySky 9x radio, which is the reason that firmware developed for the FlySky 9x works for the 9xr. You might try to contact HobbyKing to get support, but their customer support is not stellar.

This forum was set up by HobbyKing as part of their marketing campaign, but they are not active here. Nor are very many others. If you want help programming the radio, the best place is the forum maintained buy the community that developed er9x and OpenTX: openrcforums.com
You will find a lot of information and active users there.

Thank you so much Dvogonen for your kind help. I really am appreciative that you would take the time to offer insight and advice! I have sent in a request for help at Hobby King for both the speed controller issue and the radio trainer issue. They responded on the speed control, asking for a video of it etc; but not yet on the radio-trainer set-up issue. Hopefully they will respond on that. Regardless, I ordered the USB programmer and cable several days ago from Ebay, so think I will install either the OpenTX or er9x firmware once it arrives. Can you recommend which one is preferable? I think you use OpenTX, right?

I personally prefer opentx over er9x. But I am partial since I have helped out a bit and have done some coding on opentx.
Be prepared that the USBASP driver might be hard to install. Windows XP is the easiest environment to get to work, Windows 7 is hard and Windows 8 is said to be almost impossible.
The actual flashing is very simple. Install the Companion9x program. It is used to download firmware as well as backing up your models and flashing the firmware.
