I was able to fix my issues. Or rather the nice gentlemen at my local hackerspace were able to. The soldering is really difficult on this as it is easy to create a short. Not for the faint of heart (or shaky of hands).

We learn more when we fail and someone saves us. Hopefully your mentor passed on his technique for soldering small pins. None of us were great at it the first time. Much like your first RC flight.
I think your saying it now all working. Good news. It gets better with practice .

As for shaky, I do my critical work in the morning hours after some breakfast. Never later in the day. Fresh eyes, steady hands I find earlier in the morning.
(Unless later I've had one glass of red wine, never two!)

Hello hopeful hackers, if you just jump in and start opening up the radio, plugging in the iron, going to the Source and buying resistors and other things (not necessarily in that order), be advised. First, take a good long look at the microprocessor pins. You will see that they are tiny and very close together. If this is your first time, you do not stand a cat's chance in hell of doing this successfully. Sorry for the bad news folks. In fact, and this goes out to all of you thinking of doing this, you will spend hours and hours squinting and trying to control your hands and it still won't be any good. Having wrecked the micro processor chip or Atmega as the experts would have it, now you will have to order and wait for a new main board from Hobbyking, and cope with changing out the old for the new one. More hours I'm afraid.

Of course, along the way you will face frustration and, quite frankly you will wonder about it all. You will have been suckered my friends, and suckered good. Having signed up for the whole 9XR program, the time has come to admit defeat.

So here's what you should have done. First find someone in the real world who has fought this battle and won. Second, ask them what was needed, in all, including skill, equipment and aptitude. Thirdly ask him/her if they will help you. Just don't try to do this on your own. Of course there is another way and that is to buy a Taranis from Fr Sky. I will stick with my 9XR just the way it is thank you. For all you ordinary mortals, like me, without the skill and knowledge to physically work with tiny tolerances, just appreciate what you've got, or if you really have to, get another radio. Best wishes to everyone.

Sorry if this question has been asked I did a bit of searching. If this mod is done is there any problems using other modules? I want to use the Frsky djt module for my 450 quad thats on the way. But i have plenty of Dsm2 Bind and flys and a ORX Dsm2 module.

Will there be an issue using another module after the mod is done?

Hi everyone, I did the mod to my 9XR and DJT and flashed the lastest svn opentx FrSky firmware but I have a problem... maybe I accidentally shortened 4 and 5 pins of 9xr which
connects to DJT module so they accidentally connected to the 4th pin on DTJ module.
Could it be the couse of frying the module?
What voltige shuold be on 5th pin?

CONVERTING 9XR TO FRSKY TELEMETRY (DJT MODULE)

Postby ShowMaster » 22 Nov 2014, 05:44

Should be 220 ohm RRBrown resistors and can be 1/8w or 1/4 watt. 1/4 watt is the common one used.
If you're going to use a DJT or XJT module and stay with the Frsky rf link system, consider the 9xr pro. $50 more but it's plug and play telemetry, no soldering, sd card so many model memories and has sound and voice announcements. Even has the USB programmer installed.
Sell off your 9XR while it's still stock as an option for upgrading to avoid all that soldering?

Does anyone know if this revision of the HobbyKing OrangeRX TX 433mhz LRS needs to be modified in order to work with the bi-directional 9XR MAVLink telemetry mod, or is it plug-and-play once the 9XR mod is done?
